County Londonderry / Derry
County Londonderry lies to the North West of Northern Ireland, its main city - Derry City is one of five cities within the North, and is also the second largest city next to Belfast. As of 2007 the population of County Londonderry is said to be around 300,000 and is one of the ‘fastest growing urban centres’ in the north for the past 25 years. The county lies on the west banks of the River Foyle and boasts great historical importance from the famous City Walls of Derry, The Guildhall in the heart of Derry City, Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demense in Coleraine. Offering guided tours of the main city, large country parks and forests, museums and historical structures such as castles, County Londonderry is not short of things to keep you busy on your visit.
The city of Derry itself is very popular with visitors as it offers a range of shops and shopping centres, leisure activities such as walking, cycling, fishing etc, museums, neo-gothic buildings and much more. Derry City at night is also very busy, especially at the weekends with a number of nightclubs to dance the night away, traditional Irish bars where you can hear bands play fantastic live music, or you can have a few cocktails in a number of cosmopolitan bars which are popular throughout the city. Accommodation is not hard to come by and visitors will find that accommodation in Derry will suit everyone as there are three hotels within the city centre itself, an abundance of Guesthouses and Inns which vary from city centre into the surrounding countryside, and numerous hostels throughout the city. Another great attraction for Derry City is the fact that it shares a border with Donegal in the South. Here, visitors have the opportunity to hop on a bus from the city centre and travel into Southern Ireland to experience its magnificent mountains and breathtaking coastal scenery, an experience which should be taken if given the chance.
Whether you are planning your trip for business, leisure or pleasure, County Londonderry has it all. The main City is only a small part of this county and there is an array of many more things to see and do on the outskirts including castles, unbelievable scenery, museums and activities such as Deep Sea Fishing, Orienteering and Mountaineering to name but a few. With friendly and warm people added into the mix, County Londonderry has everything to make the perfect holiday.
