Gortin Glen Forest

Located at the opening of the Sperrin Mountains, Gortin Glen Forest was first opened in the 1960’s and was intended to be used for timber production before being open to the public. With various trails including orienteering, nature trail, and activities such as horse riding and mountain biking, Gortin Glen Forest is a tranquil hub of activity and nature.

What makes Gortin Glen stand out from other forests in Northern Ireland is its five mile drive that weaves through the forest and gives spectacular views of the surrounding scenery. It is an appreciated part of the whole park as it means that visitors can see the forest even in the worst weather with numerous panorama areas where one can pull in and see the magnificent views from the comfort of their own vehicles. The nature trail would probably be the most popular with families as it allows them to explore the forest yet enlighten you on the nature within the forest and surrounding areas, through providing information posts throughout the walk. Horse riding facilities are also popular with families and with a daily pass which can be attained from the Head Forester; families can enjoy a ride around a circular route of four and a half miles which is fenced to prevent anyone from straying into the main forest.

Open from first thing in the morning until sunset, Gortin Glen Forest gives everyone who visits an opportunity to experience the natural beauty that Gortin Glen holds. With a campsite, seasonal tea rooms, disability facilities, BBQ area, and guided tours, the forest has everything travellers need and offers much to do whether you are on a family holiday or a quiet getaway for two and a visit for just a day or even a long weekend will undoubtedly guarantee not only a relaxing break but will leave you feeling invigorated, which is why Gortin Glen Forest is a much appreciated and special place in the hearts of the local people.
